This week sees the long-awaited re-launch of Dave Swindells&rsquo; instant bestseller.

1989 the number, another summer, get down, sound of the funky drummer.&nbsp;
Music hittin&rsquo; your heart &lsquo;cause I know you got soul.
So sung Chuck D and Flavor Flav on Public Enemy&rsquo;s hit record Fight the Power. Little did they realise that in that same year, across the Atlantic, on a small island in the Mediterranean, music was hitting hearts and minds in a manner that would change the musical landscape forever.
In Ibiza, clubs such as Amnesia, Ku and Pacha were playing host to an eclectic array of international party people, dancing under the stars, soundtracked by the likes of <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/ibiza/the-heritage-project-jaime-fiorito-shines-a-spotlight-on-ibiza-s-rich-musical-his" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DJ Alfredo</a>, whose long and varied sets are held in the same esteem by <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/ibiza/graphic-viewing-ibiza-s-mythical-poster-art" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dance music</a> cognoscenti as those of Larry Levan at Paradise Garage and David Mancuso at The Loft&nbsp;

These were heady and hedonistic times that lit the touchpaper for the Second Summer of Love and the subsequent global explosion of dance music. Reveller&rsquo;s recollections from this time are somewhat hazy: pre-mobile phones and too busy dancing, few thought to take a camera to record reminders of this poignant period. Fortunately, former Time Out London Nightlife Editor, Dave Swindells, was on the ground to document both the dance and the spirit that surrounded it, before the clubs received roofs and the influx of mass tourism arrived. As he explains,
&ldquo;It was easy to believe that almost anything was possible in Ibiza in 1989; that many of the big clubs put MDMA powder into their cocktails; that the music could jump across genres and not only be exciting, but better than the sum of its parts; that there was always another club or bar to carry on to as long as you wanted to carry on; that it didn&rsquo;t really matter about your age or sexual preference or how much money you had if you came for the fiesta and the music (although it helped to dress up to get into Pacha, and only the wealthy could buy tables overlooking the dance floors there); that there was always a secret cove or beach where you could create your own party... And all of that was pretty much true.&rdquo;
Swindells&rsquo; iconic images were initially compiled in a small book entitled Spirit of Ibiza '89', published in 2011. Publisher and bookseller <a href="https://www.ideanow.online/">IDEA</a> then produced an expanded version, swiftly selling out the first two editions. For those that missed out, a third version will be launched at IDEA&rsquo;s Dover Street store on the 10th May. A perfect reminder both for those that were there and those that weren&rsquo;t.
