The Italian designer&rsquo;s remote hillside finca is a romantic island hideout.

Elsa Peretti, celebrated designer and muse, left a lasting impact on the world of <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/fashion/oscars-2024-best-jewellery-looks-red-carpet-celebrity-jewellery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jewellery</a> and style through her revolutionary, minimalist designs and her lifelong love of Spain, both in the Catalonian village of Sant Mart&iacute; Vell and on the island of <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/ibiza/five-amazing-autumn-hikes-in-ibiza" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ibiza</a>. Born in Florence in 1940, Peretti became synonymous with timeless elegance, merging boldness with simplicity. Yet it was her time in Spain, much of it spent in her mountainside finca in Ibiza, that inspired some of her most cherished creations and shaped her unique artistic vision. Earlier this year, the remote and largely abandoned finca was stumbled upon by long-time Ibiza resident, the shoot producer Georgina Scarbrough Penn and her family, for whom it was love at first sight. &lsquo;We reached the end of the winding camino and saw the church of <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/ibiza/san-miguel-s-gathering-gallery-reframing-the-future-of-contemporary-art-in-ibi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Miguel</a> across the valley to our left and the port and sea to our right. We felt like we&rsquo;d come home,&rsquo; recalls Georgina. &lsquo;The house has such captivating energy and natural style. It&rsquo;s an honour to be part of preserving its heritage.&rsquo;

Peretti's love affair with Spain began in her early modelling days, where she met the acclaimed Catalan photographer <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/ibiza/ibiza-history-photography-oriol-maspons-footprints-in-the-sand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oriol Maspons</a>. Their relationship brought her closer to Spanish culture and art, opening her eyes to the rich textures, colours and forms around her. Maspons, known for his innovative and modernist approach to photography, often captured Peretti in iconic portraits that reflect the elegance and free-spirited energy she radiated. Through him, she connected with the vibrant art circles of <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/ibiza/hermes-and-elvira-solana-celebrate-a-century-of-craft-in-barcelona" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barcelona</a>, sparking a lifelong admiration for Spanish aesthetics.

One of Peretti&rsquo;s most influential friendships was with Salvador Dal&iacute;, a fellow visionary and nonconformist. Dal&iacute;, known for his surrealist mastery, appreciated Peretti&rsquo;s ability to see beauty in simplicity, and the two shared a mutual respect and understanding of each other&rsquo;s artistry. While their styles were vastly different, they found common ground in the idea that art could push boundaries, and Dal&iacute;&rsquo;s eccentricity likely encouraged Peretti to explore her own style even more deeply. She would eventually channel her impressions of Spanish culture and landscapes into designs that emphasized organic shapes and effortless beauty.

When Peretti discovered Ibiza, the island that would become her sanctuary and artistic muse. Drawn to its wild beauty and unpretentious way of life, she purchased a traditional finca near the northern village of San Miguel overlooking the ancient, fortified church and her beloved Mediterranean Sea: &lsquo;My relationship with the sea is total,&rsquo; Peretti declared in 1990. &lsquo;As a little girl, I searched for beautiful shells on the beach. At that time, beaches were more generous, no plastic, just polished glasses and small shells.&rsquo; Her secluded Ibiza home, with its whitewashed walls and rustic wooden beams, embodied the simplicity and natural elegance that defined her personal aesthetic. Peretti was known for her unique decorating style, mixing rustic Spanish elements with a minimalist approach. Her interiors were understated yet refined, with sparse, functional furniture, earthy tones, and artisanal details. Ibiza remained her creative refuge, a place where she could find peace, inspiration, and connection with the land. Her love for Spain and its culture permeated her work, making her pieces a true celebration of the beauty found in simplicity.
