Three Decades of Getty Images
It's one of the favourite photographic mediums for celebrities, the media, and history buffs alike. To celebrate its history, the company shared with L'Officiel an exclusive selection of images that speak louder than words.
Founded in 1995, Getty Images has been making waves ever since. Known for having one of the world's largest private photo archives, this platform has captured moments that transcend and define history in a single image: from iconic pop culture scenes, such as Madonna's kiss with Britney Spears at the 2003 VMAs; or when Lady Diana wore the revenge dress to a dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994. Today, 30 years after its inception, Getty Images is a leader in the photojournalism industry, covering more than 160,000 events annually: from political news, sports, entertainment, and even the most important dates in the fashion industry such as Fashion Weeks, red carpets, and award ceremonies.
“We are the window to the world, from the most creative content that brings brands to life to coverage of the most important events on the planet. To celebrate three decades of this global visual library, the American company exclusively shared part of its archives with us. Ten visual narratives that made history, but seen from different angles: Amy Winehouse offstage, sitting on a sidewalk in the streets of London; Karl Lagerfeld with Heidi Slimane outside the Dior Fall-Winter 2007 men's show; a portrait of singer Cindy Lauper during the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards; Marlon Brando training like a boxer at the beginning of his film career; and Madonna impersonating Maria Antonietta for her performance at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards, among other scenes that have become iconic moments in contemporary history.
