The birth of Prêt-à-porter

Haute couture , as we know, has always been the highest expression of craftsmanship and creativity in the fashion industry. It is synonymous with exclusive garments with a special sartorial allure , handmade by skilled tailors and craftsmen with fine fabrics and elaborate details. However, all of this was only accessible to a small privileged elite. In the 50s and 60s, overseas, Prêt-à-porter was born , which introduced a new concept of clothing: ready-to-use, more accessible and innovative garments.

Although the term &quot; Prêt-à-porter &quot; was coined in the United States in 1948 (ready-to-wear), the consecration of this new form of clothing took place in France during the 60s. Right here, the famous French designer Yves Saint Laurent brought it to the catwalk for the first time. In Italy, this trend arrived in 1971, when Walter Albini chose Milan as the venue for the first fashion show of his Prêt-à-porter line at the historic headquarters of the Società del Giardino in Palazzo Spinola, thus initiating the first &quot;Milanese Fashion Week&quot; . This event was greeted with great enthusiasm by famous fashion houses including Krizia and Missoni .
