There are three common reasons why some people are cautious about thinking about marriage.

However, for many people, the thought of marriage instills deep fear and insecurity. When this obsession becomes intense and persistent, it is called Gamophobia.
Symptoms of this fear often include anxiety or panic when thinking about marriage, avoiding related conversations or situations, and feeling insecure about being in a serious relationship. Additionally, people with Gamophobia may overanalyze their partner's flaws to justify their fear of commitment, and often prioritize casual, no-strings-attached relationships.
A 2024 study published in the journal Family Transitions explored young people's views on marriage and identified some of the reasons for this anxiety. According to the study, there are three main reasons why some people are cautious about thinking about marriage.

The experience of growing up in a family where parents are divorced can have a profound effect on how a person views marriage. Research shows that people whose parents are divorced tend to have more negative attitudes toward marriage. Children of divorce often come away with the idea that relationships are inherently unsustainable. They may ask themselves, “If my parents couldn’t make it work, why should I?” or “I don’t want to go through what they went through.” These thoughts lead to a lack of effort or commitment in their own relationships, which can create a vicious cycle that leads to the same undesirable outcomes they feared. However, the researchers also emphasized that not everyone reacts in the same way. Some people become more pessimistic about marriage, but others find hope, using their parents’ experiences as lessons for building stronger, healthier relationships. The study found that people whose parents successfully remarried – especially men – tended to have a more positive view of marriage, suggesting that they perceived the possibility of starting over and growing from hardship.

Fear of family conflict recurrence

Even if your parents still live together, growing up in a conflict-filled household can be deeply traumatic. Research from The Family Journal found that people who grew up in high-conflict environments often associate marriage with discord and unhappiness. They harbor fears that their own relationships will repeat family tragedies, leading them to feel hesitant about getting married. Early experiences play a significant role in shaping a person’s attitudes toward intimacy, trust, and vulnerability in later relationships. These fears can cause them to avoid commitment altogether or become hypervigilant in romantic relationships, constantly fearing and anticipating conflict. Interestingly, the quality of family dynamics – regardless of whether or not divorce has occurred – plays an important role in shaping attitudes about marriage. Families that encourage autonomy and independence tend to foster individuals with healthier views of relationships. Conversely, those who grow up in environments that lack autonomy may feel a strong desire for independence, leading to negative attitudes that future relationships will continue to be constraining or suffocating. The researchers also noted: “Young people often have ambivalent feelings about marriage because they value independence and autonomy from a young age, but are still influenced by traditional values that Western societies promote.”

Avoidant attachment style

Another factor that contributes to fear of marriage is discomfort with intimacy in relationships. According to attachment theory, early relationships with caregivers profoundly influence how we interact in intimate relationships later in life. People with an “avoidant” attachment style often fear intimacy and dependence, which makes them hesitant to think about marriage. For people with an avoidant attachment style, marriage is often seen as a symbol of weakness, loss of autonomy, and codependency – something they find uncomfortable or threatening. This attachment style often stems from inconsistent or emotionally distant caregiving in childhood. To protect themselves, they learn to suppress their emotional needs and avoid intimacy. This mindset can persist into adulthood, with profound implications for romantic relationships. Avoidants often prioritize independence over connection, viewing marriage not as a partnership but as a risk of losing their individual identity. They worry about becoming too dependent on their partner or feeling trapped in a relationship where their needs are ignored or not understood. This can lead them to approach relationships cautiously, or even avoid long-term commitments altogether. They also struggle with trust and vulnerability—important foundations of a healthy marriage. They often fear that their partner will hurt or leave them, even when there is no evidence that this will happen. The good news is that this attachment style is not set in stone. With self-awareness and effort, it is possible to develop a more secure attachment style. Partners of people with an avoidant attachment style also play an important role. With patience and consistency, they can help their partner understand that intimacy and trust do not mean losing themselves. Anxiety about marriage is often a defense mechanism stemming from past experiences, but it doesn’t have to define your future. It can push you to take a hard look at what you really want from a long-term relationship, and help you question inherited values, break generational patterns, heal wounds, and open yourself up to building something new.
