Popularity on the <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/music/collar-new-band-cantopop-tour-hong-kong-who-are-collar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pop scene</a> came with the global hit <em>&ldquo;I'm Like A Bird&rdquo;,</em> which became a symbol for an entire generation of romantics, followed by the 2006 album <em>&ldquo;Loose&rdquo;</em> with hits like <em>&ldquo;Maneater&rdquo;</em> (a hit which also reappeared in Guadagnino's film &ldquo;Challengers&rdquo;), or <em>&ldquo;Say It Right&rdquo;,</em> selling over 10 million copies worldwide. After her last independently released album <em>&ldquo;Ride&rdquo;</em> in 2017, Nelly took a break from music until a stage appearance alongside Drake in 2022 and a <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/soul-spirituality/body-positivity-and-social-media-the-impact-of-online-platforms-on-our-body-image" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social media</a> renaissance: her 2006 hit <em>&ldquo;Promiscuous&rdquo;</em> went viral on TikTok. In 2023 there was a full-blown comeback with the single <em>&ldquo;Eat Your Man&rdquo;</em> featuring DJ Dom Dolla and another dance single, <em>&ldquo;Keep Going Up,&rdquo;</em> featuring longtime collaborators Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. After a performance at Coachella where the artist literally gave her all, we met her to find out everything about the new album and the long-awaited return to the scene.<br /></span></p>
        <p><strong>L'OFFICIEL: How long have you been working on the album?<br /></strong> <strong style="text-align: justify; letter-spacing: 0px;">NELLY FURTADO:</strong> <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; text-align: justify; letter-spacing: 0px;">For at least three years. When I started, at the end of the 90s, I think I experimented with the most underground genres of the time: from trip hop to electronica, while now the direction is decidedly pop, with immediate melodic patterns, which make you want to dance . In the last two years I have been going to clubs and parties a lot more, I have watched DJs put my songs on playlists and I have seen the audience singing and dancing, it has helped me understand what kind of music to make for the album coming out in the autumn .</span></p>

        <p><strong>LO: How does it feel to make a big return to the music world <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">and what was your first Coachella experience like?<br /></span></strong> <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;"><strong>NF:</strong></span> <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">I understood that twenty years after I started, my music is still very popular, it was my daughter who pointed out to me, for example, that my songs were trending on TikTok. Coachella was like daydreaming. Making electronic music with Dom Dolla over the last two years has definitely been one of the greatest joys of my life, because it took me back to my adolescence when I took my first steps into the world of electronic music and attended raves. While the audience was fired up to the tune of our single &ldquo;Eat Your Man&rdquo; I stumbled onto the stage. I was wearing Balenciaga sneakers studded with Swarovski, at the height of the performance I didn't see the pyrotechnics station and I fell, hurting my finger. At the time I didn't realize anything, the adrenaline was so high that I only noticed it after the performance was over. It will remain in history that Nelly tripped over her Balenciagas.</span></p>

I have a song with Bomba Est&eacute;reo. I always try to record songs in Spanish and soon also in Portuguese. I also don't hide the idea of ​​being able to sing in Italian, I like Latin languages, so why not? The song with Juanes brings with it an incredible story, we hadn't been in contact for ten years, after the first collaboration in 2002 with "Fotograf&igrave;a", one day the cell phone rang and Juanes told me he had found a cassette with a song he had written and composed 20 years earlier which was perfect for me. The text talks about one of the greatest loves in history: complex and beautiful.</span></p>
        <p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>LO:</strong> <span><strong>The single that comes out in May is called &ldquo;Love Bites&rdquo; produced by SG Lewis featuring Tove Lo, is this also about love?<br /></strong></span> <span><strong>NF:</strong></span> <span>It's a sexy song about desire. A love story that you know isn't perfect, but at the same time is indispensable. The song was produced by SG Lewis, a real talent while Tove Lo came through mutual acquaintances. The whole thing was a perfect match. While we were shooting the video with Tove Lo we forgot what we were doing and started dancing and singing at the top of our lungs as if we were having fun in a club.</span> <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;"></span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>LO:</strong> <span><strong>How much has the music industry changed since you started? Was it difficult for a young woman to start this career? Any advice for new musicians on how to navigate the industry today?</strong><br /></span> <strong>NF:</strong> <span>I started early and I was also lucky enough to meet a good manager who believed in me. I was only 18 years old and since the previous year I had been working to allow myself hours and hours of recording in the studio to compose my music, I was very determined, I had excellent intuition. I remember having a poster of Mary J. Blige on the wall when I was 12 years old, it was the photo of the album cover where she was wearing her white Borsalino and blonde braids, I remember that I saw an artist I loved in that photo, not I focused on its gender. As a teenager I knew how to get in touch</span> <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">with males too, I blended in as much as possible because I wanted them to see me for my abilities and not because I was a girl. Always put your skills before everyone, learn to read the room you enter. At 45 I am very aware of who I am, how I got here and what I see in my future. My aunt was a seamstress, and in her basement there were fabrics, buttons, sewing machines, magazines and Burda patterns, and on Saturdays for fun, me, my cousins, my brother and my sister had fun improvising mini-shows . We all grew up with the privilege of having clothes created specifically for every occasion, from church to prom. At the beginning of my career I was definitely more tomboyish, with cargo pants, tops and sneakers, it took me a little longer to feel comfortable with high heels, but then with my third album I changed course. In the case of shoes for example, I will have at least a hundred! For Coachella, for example, I worked with Loca, the top with the embroidered butterfly and the trousers were tailor-made for me by this couturier, choosing the fabric that was hand-dyed. Fashion is one of life's pleasures, a pleasure that I like to share with fans because from the stage I always throw them a piece to keep as a souvenir. I believe in the collective unconscious and I believe there is something that connects us all. People would come into the room with me and I would just write down what the stream of consciousness inspired me to do. I think of it as a kind of primitive form of NFT. I'm currently thinking about making a sort of docu-film about my life as a mother and artist. I would like to share with the public the passion with which I live my life made of music and children of different ages: the eldest is 20, then there are the two little ones aged 6 and 5.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><b>LO: Among your other passions is acting, we remember seeing you in TV series like Roswell or CSI. It premiered in April. It's a love story in which the protagonist, the actress Lucy Boynton travels through time and in a key moment of the story the soundtrack is "I'm like a Bird" one of my most famous singles, while at the end of the film you will hear &ldquo;Never Lost&rdquo;. The film's claim offers an interesting idea: "finding the right song will change your past, while finding the right person will change your future".</span></p>
