Sabrina Carpenter talks to Apple Music about her album “Short n&#39; Sweet,” writing it, and also talks about her hit song “Espresso.”

She talks about writing the album in France, her hit song "Espresso," how she dealt with fame as a child, and her growth so far.
When was the moment you knew you had finished the album &ldquo;Short n' Sweet&rdquo;? &nbsp;
I wonder a lot right up until the release date, like &ldquo;Is it done?&rdquo;, &ldquo;What could I change?&rdquo;, &ldquo;Can I write more songs?&rdquo;. Life doesn&rsquo;t stop, it doesn&rsquo;t wait for anyone, so it&rsquo;s hard to know when a chapter in your life should be closed.
So I just listened to my gut. I know this sounds clich&eacute;, but there's a moment when you realize it's time to wrap up. It's not like, "Oh, and I wrote song number 12," it's like, "You know what? I'll be okay for the next week and then I'll write the next album." It felt like I was ready to wrap up the album.
I feel like the theme throughout this album is not just self-discovery, but also overcoming lingering pain and despair. Like the hurt behind the seemingly positive, humorous songs.
Yes. I called the album &ldquo;Short n' Sweet&rdquo; for a number of reasons, not least because I&rsquo;m short. I thought back on relationships, and felt like the short ones affected me the most. I looked back at my sometimes erratic behavior. The moments and mistakes I allowed myself to make say a lot about my character.
And again, I think about the album, the writing. I know that years from now, looking back, I won't be the same person I was when I wrote these songs.
Indeed, we often find it difficult to accept our own mistakes, rather than admit and allow ourselves to make mistakes&hellip;
Yeah. The sense of trial and error probably comes from the fact that I&rsquo;ve been working since I was a kid. So I didn&rsquo;t have time to go to prom, or have a crazy summer vacation in France. So I just allowed myself to live life to the fullest, to feel everything in the moment, besides making music. I&rsquo;m only 25.

I had to try a few times not to become better or successful, but for people to understand and know who I am.

People often talk about the lack of privacy, and the image maintenance of famous artists, but I don't think you're the type of person who wants to be bound by that. I guess you're the type of person who actively tries to reject those boundaries and limitations. &nbsp;
I just don't want to live in fear of accidentally upsetting someone.
The craziest thing is probably when I'm on tour, when my mind has no worries, I just listen to my feelings. After a performance, it takes me a few days to focus on composing again. And when I do, everything I write is very sincere and emotional.
When you write it down, it's like saying goodbye to old feelings, right?
I think I said hello to a lot of things. That's when I started my album.
Talking about your hits, we can't help but mention "Espresso". &nbsp;
I call this song &ldquo;A stupid little song&rdquo;.
When I write songs, I feel like the seed is always there, that I always have a direction, a strong invisible belief there, and a lot of challenges, boundaries to break. And if you don't do that, it's almost like you don't know who you are, or you don't understand yourself. And I think I'm just one of those artists who takes a few tries. And I even think that taking a few tries isn't about being better or successful, but about doing that, so that people will understand and know who I am.
I remember watching YouTube videos, and you'd sit back in the back of the stage and talk to the fans. I was like, wow, you're finding your fans, and they're letting you know that everything's okay. We really appreciate you and you don't have to be scared.
Maybe even more than that, I have a group of young girls who have been my fans since I was 14, who have really been there for me through everything, from the very beginning, and they still come to my shows to this day. I think it's a special feeling to be with them through life, breakups, love, family and college.
Because they are growing up, too, along with you.
Yeah, I'm so grateful for that, that's what tours are all about, when people keep their feelings to themselves. On the other hand, it creates a space for people to understand that there are real, very close people behind the songs, behind the elaborate hair and the strange costumes.
Speaking of growing up, I also want to thank my mother because I love her very much. A few weeks ago, there was too much going on and I wasn&rsquo;t feeling well. My mother said, &ldquo;You need to go outside and I want you to put your feet on the grass and dirt, silly.&rdquo; Yes. My mother wanted my feet to touch the ground.
&ldquo;Feet need to touch the ground,&rdquo; how specifically did your mother advise?
&ldquo;You&rsquo;re always indoors, on planes or in hotels. You need to put your feet on the ground and actually read.&rdquo; My mother told me to read a book, at least a few chapters.
My mother wanted me to be normal. At the time I thought that was stupid. I didn't want to do this. Now, I'm going out without shoes, which is crazy. Okay, my feet are dirty.

Can we talk about the music you&#39;re listening to? Now, I listen to the Bee Gees every day. The Bee Gees are my safe haven. And my mom was talking about them a lot yesterday, because I said, “Well, I don’t think any of them are attractive, but their voices are amazing,” and she said, “No, no.
