Two hundred years on, the scene replays on four-inch screens. The logic is identical and ever more diabolical: you exist to the extent that you are visible. You multiply yourself in order to exist. And you drown, not in darkness but in light. Let us call it by its name: the visibility trap.&nbsp;A preliminary confession, because original sin must be declared at once: I came across this Rossini aria on Instagram itself, a classical music account, fifteen seconds, subtitles. The algorithm knows me and knows where I am. So this is a manifesto on the visibility trap, born inside the very mechanism it sets out to describe. Not an exception to the rule, but proof that this rule admits no exceptions. More a pathology than a weakness. The condition of anyone who has built a public presence in the attention economy. You cannot vanish for a week. The brand is the face. The artist no longer makes works but becomes a work himself, on permanent display, with no closing time.

Everyone knows the vertigo, nobody acknowledges it: the moment when the character answers in your place, smiles in the photographs while you are already somewhere else, waiting. But for what? And who is waiting for whom?&nbsp;Visibility is quantity, fame is narrative. Being seen is not enough: you must become a story, and once that story begins, it stops being about you. Ibiza knows this trap. It knows it better than anywhere else in the world because it has the gift, or the curse, of carrying things through to their conclusion. And it does so with a cruel refinement: it wraps tragedy in white linen and lights it with the most Instagrammable of sunsets.&nbsp;Whoever arrives carrying their own character, a distracted tension toward the self, like a suit too tight worn with new ease, often runs into the most derisory of rebuttals. The heat, the blinding light, the island’s aesthetic all seem to prove them right. But it is the most elegant of narcissistic tragedies: the kind that fails to recognise itself because it is too well dressed to look like a shipwreck.

And yet the island does not lie. It is not a place of guaranteed authenticity, not the opposite of civilisation. It is a mirror with a particular curvature. It returns images enlarged, accelerated, taken to their extreme consequences. Sometimes wounded by the exhibitionist impulse. Sometimes freed from it. This issue explores that threshold. In the stories, the portraits, the bodies and the geographies that inhabit it. The question Rossini poses without answering: what remains, when one stops being Figaro? What lies beneath the performance of one’s own indispensability? And is it still possible to tell the moment of acting from the moment of living, or has that line, crossed so many times, vanished altogether?&nbsp;Perhaps it is precisely here, in this understanding, that everything new finds its first breath. The gesture that precedes language is the idea that certain acts, breaking bread, immersing oneself in water, rising before dawn, dancing until you lose your own name, need no explanation in order to work. Indeed, they resist explanation. The moment you name them, you betray them.&nbsp;Every added word is a mediation, and mediation is precisely what the ritual gesture refuses. It does not ask to be understood, it asks only to be performed. Perhaps this is the difference between knowing and doing: knowing needs an audience, however small, to witness its own thinking. Ritual doing does not. It simply happens, indifferent to who is watching or not watching.&nbsp;Ritual is a spectacle for oneself. It is a form of pre-verbal intelligence. The believer who kneels, the dancer who slips into trance, the freediver who takes on ballast before the descent: none of them is saying anything. They are doing something that words could only diminish.&nbsp;The newborn on our first cover does it perfectly: it cannot say, and yet it announces. The first breath is a ritual gesture in the purest sense, not communication but presence. It is the body acting before the mind has found the words to explain the gesture.&nbsp;Figaro is all language, all announcement, all verbal performance. The visibility trap is also a trap of saying, of being perpetually in the act of explaining oneself, presenting oneself, naming oneself. Ritual, in this sense, is its opposite. Not disappearance, but the silence of the gesture.&nbsp;Something done without an audience, or something that, even performed in front of everyone, does not need to be understood in order truly to happen. It is a trust that is exercised rather than declared, the same trust, perhaps, that allows us to be guided without needing to know why.&nbsp;I am reminded of something my son’s math teacher said the other day: “When working through functions, Pietro, you must learn to trust your automatic responses, and you must not fear that, simply for lack of mediation, they will necessarily lead you into error.” This far from obvious advice, received almost bashfully, made me think that automathic responses are in the end a help, a gift left to us by consolidated intelligence. A happy counterpoint to more laborious reasoning. A string of rocks risen from the sea on which to rest before slipping back among the waves of thought. The mathematician who solves an equation by automatism is not bypassing intelligence: he is using its most distilled form.&nbsp;And this added a dimension to the notion of ritual I had not considered: ritual is not only pre-verbal, it is post-cognitive. It does not come before thought, it comes after. But in its absence. It is thought that has settled so deeply it no longer needs to be thought.&nbsp;The dancer’s body that knows the sequence without the mind directing it. The religious rite repeated a thousand times, still working even when faith falls silent. The tennis player’s hand rising skyward before the serve. The pianist’s finger settling on the key before the mind has sought it.&nbsp;There is something profoundly anti-Figaro in all this. Figaro is noise, speed, continuous presence, the very opposite of silent automatism. Where the visibility trap is the trap of those who never trust, ritual is pure trust. Trust in something already earned, consolidated, interiorised. An intelligence that no longer needs to prove itself.

And on an island like Ibiza, where everything seems to be on show, where everything seeks light and the gaze of others, where ritual drives engagement and entering the shamanic circle requires a QR code first, ritual doing becomes almost a subversive act. Something that happens in the one space visibility has yet to colonise: the space within.
