Todd Snyder, renowned American designer, made his debut as creative director for Woolrich with the presentation of his first collection, Woolrich Black Label, during men's fashion week in Milan last January. This new line, composed of two distinct collections, Heritage and Technical , which tell a sophisticated reinterpretation of the classic woolrich grades.
L'OFFICIEL: What is your favourite piece?
TODD ​​SNYDER: It's hard to pick a favourite. Initially I thought of including only about ten items from my collection within the total show, mixing them with the Todd Snyder brand. But as I put together the outfits, I had the distinct feeling that these pieces deserved their own space to really shine. The collection was so powerful. It can be seen in the colours, fabrics and silhouettes. I tried to renew the brand, reinventing key pieces such as backpacks and boots, reflecting on the importance that Woolrich should represent in the contemporary men's wardrobe.
LO: Tell us about the materials used in this collection...
TS: I worked a lot on the materials, trying to improve them. I explored Woolrich's archives, filled with 190 years of history, to gain inspiration and make meaningful change. For example, I chose cashmere and other very particular fabrics. Obviously, they are all Italian fabrics, and we have used many very high-performance technical ones, such as a shiny nylon for the outerwear and an extremely soft technical fleece.
LO: And about aesthetics in general. How do you think men are evolving in the world of fashion?
TS: I think the new generation is very attentive to the environment and sustainability. For this reason, we used recyclable fabrics such as polyester and cashmere. I wanted to create garments that last over time and are contemporary at the same time. I blended authentic workwear with a clean, sophisticated style, reflecting an evolution towards an aesthetic that blends tailoring with an outdoor spirit.
LO: Are there any pieces in this collection that you consider particularly iconic?
TS: All the pieces are functional, but some stand out for their absolute uniqueness. For example, we have a camouflage garment made with a three-dimensional mesh, and a very comfortable cargo bag also in shiny nylon.
LO: When did it all start?
TS: This project started about a year ago. It was important to me that everything was flawless, especially considering the importance of Woolrich here in Italy. I have put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the highest quality. For me, authenticity is key. I learned from the experts and worked with amazing people. I wanted to give a contemporary but at the same time classic interpretation, whilst maintaining a link with the tradition of the brand.
LO: Finally, how could you summarize the two lines of the collection?
TS: Of course. The collection is divided into two distinctive lines: Heritage and Technical. The Heritage line is inspired by Woolrich's rich history, offering luxurious reinterpretations of the most iconic models. On the other hand, the Technical line embodies innovation and performance, with a distinctive sartorial touch that characterizes my style. This series combines innovative design and resistant materials, creating garments characterized by style and extreme functionality. I hope that both lines can meet the expectations of all our customers, carrying forward the Woolrich brand with pride and innovation.
