Therefore, it is important that drinking (and everything that surrounds it) is demystified and moves along with modern life. In the fast pace of our daily lives, practicality is almost a matter of survival. For today's young adult, filling cupboards with different glasses (which are used once a year) or having crystal utensils that cannot be washed in the washing machine is something &ldquo;from the last century&rdquo;.
On the other hand, the world of wine - for most people - still seems to be full of rules of etiquette and traditions. Considering this dichotomy, we asked wine educator, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/redsubmarinewines/">Deia Berthault</a> , about how to choose wine glasses without leaving practicality aside.

L&#39;Officiel: Are wine glasses made from crystal better? Deia Berthault: Yes. Crystal clear glass, popularly called crystal, is better than ordinary glass for tasting wine. As the crystal is more porous than ordinary glass, the friction between the wine and the glass increases, causing more aroma molecules to be released when the wine is swirled. L&#39;Officiel: Can you put a crystal glass in the dishwasher? Deia Berthault: It depends on the crystal! Most traditional crystals cannot be washed in the washing machine. This is because they run the risk of breaking or losing their shine. However, there are manufacturers that work with crystal technologies that are suitable for use in machines. An example of this is Bohemia&#39;s Cristalex technology. Before placing your glasses in the machine, check with the manufacturer or retailer whether the crystal in the glass in question is suitable for this purpose. In any case, even if the bowl can be put in the dishwasher, it is good to take the following precautions: use light cycles with warm water and neutral soap, do not place the bowls too close to each other (to reduce the risk of banging and breaking). ), do not wash the glasses together with metal dishes (some crystals may lose their shine) or with very dirty/greasy dishes (to avoid creating a bad smell in the glasses). L&#39;Officiel: Does each wine have its own glass? Which glasses should we have at home? Deia Berthault: There are many different glasses and, yes, some glasses were designed for specific wines. However – unless you are a 3-star Michelin restaurant or an eccentric wine enthusiast – it is not necessary to have dozens of different models. In general, glasses are divided into 4 categories: sparkling wine glasses, white/rosé glasses, red glasses and fortified glasses. To know which glasses you need, the ideal is to first understand your wine consumption and, from there, identify which categories of glasses you really need to have at home.

L'Officiel: Is there a glass that fits all types of wine? Or is there a way to set up a &ldquo;wild card&rdquo;?
Deia Berthaul t : Some brands &ndash; such as Zalto and Gabriel-Glas &ndash; created so-called &ldquo;universal glasses&rdquo; that would be capable of enhancing the aromas and flavours of any wine served in it. These cups, however, in addition to being expensive, require greater care in handling as they are more sensitive. Furthermore, it is not recommended that they be machine washed.
If you drink red wine frequently, focus on choosing glasses for red. Choose glasses with a capacity above 410ml and that are transparent, crystal, with a stem and with a bowl larger than the mouth. These same glasses can be used to serve white and ros&eacute; wines, as long as a smaller amount of wine is served (2 fingers). This is so that white/ros&eacute; wines, which are served colder (7-10&deg;C), do not heat up in the large glass.
Now, if you consume white and ros&eacute; wines more frequently, focus on choosing a glass of white. Choose glasses with a capacity of up to 360ml (which are also transparent, crystal, with a stem and with a bowl larger than the mouth). Sparkling wines can be served in white wine glasses without any problems, and many people actually prefer it that way.
In the case of red wines, this is not quite the case. As white wine glasses are smaller, wine aeration is not as efficient, which can affect the release of aromas in some wines. What you can do (if you don't want to invest in red glasses) is aerate the reds that will benefit from aeration outside the glass with the help of an aerator or decanter.
If you also consume sparkling and fortified wines frequently, it is worth considering investing in sets of glasses specific to these styles. Otherwise, you can serve them in whatever glass you have (whether red or white) - better than spending money on glasses that will collect dust in the cupboard.

L'Officiel: Which glass do you recommend for those just starting out and looking for good value for money?
Deia Berthault: I'm sure there must be many glasses with good value for money on the market. But the ones I know and recommend are those from Bohemia with Cristalex technology, especially the Xtra and Roberta lines. They are easy to find on the internet, affordable, ecological (they do not contain lead in their composition) and can be washed in the washing machine. Very practical and super aligned with the lifestyle of young adults new to wine.
