Between flared sleeves and turbans, Max Mara parades in the Doges Palace in Venice. And to celebrate the ancient dialogue woven by the city, a crossroads between East and West, garments inspired by the travels of Marco Polo and the marbles of the Basilica of San Marco. It is colour camel that opens <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/fashion/weekend-max-mara-s-new-collection-summer-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Max Mara</a>'s Resort 2025 collection in Venice . Then it's the turn of silk, in nuanced shades, like the one that Marco Polo (the seven hundredth anniversary of his death is in 2024) may have brought from ancient Japan through Constantinople. &laquo;I was interested in exploring the beauty generated by the meeting of cultures&raquo; explains the creative director of Max Mara , Ian Griffiths , &laquo;embodied by this city, which in the Middle Ages was a crossroads between East and West. The cradle of what we today call luxury."

The outerwear is bold, from &quot;robes de chambre&quot; to parkas, through trench coats and tabards. And then again the duster coats - spectacular silk ones which, similarly to the asymmetrically draped velvet dresses, bear prints inspired by the mosaics of San Marco. Prints which for creative director Ian Griffiths represent a return to the past. «My last collection during school was inspired by the mosaics of San Marco. I made it together with a colleague who attended Manchester Polytechnic. I took those studies out of the drawers... it&#39;s exciting to see them on the catwalk here today.&quot;

Large flared and puffed sleeves, turbans (made in collaboration with Stephen Jones, <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/fashion/jean-paul-gaultier-new-guest-designer-shayne-oliver" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jean Paul Gaultier</a> and Meghan Markle's favourite hatter) and velvet pannier skirts are the protagonists of a show that seems inspired by the large paintings by Bellini or Carpaccio preserved at the Accademia Galleries. Paintings that visually narrate the meeting (and sometimes clash) between different cultures, between West and East, two realities put in continuous communication thanks to the central role of Venice in the medieval political system and in the centuries to come.
