Hardly any other item of clothing is so (weather-)resistant and stylish at the same time.

They may appear again and again in slightly different cuts and new colours, but essentially they remain the same over the years. The trench coat is definitely one of those pieces.

To understand how this garment achieved its enduring fame, we need to go back a few years. The trench coat has a long history and development. What is best known about the trench coat is that it was worn by senior soldiers and officers during the First World War as a windproof and weatherproof coat. However, the actual birth of the iconic piece of clothing dates back even further, namely in the 19th century. At that time, inventors in Great Britain developed waterproof regular coats, which later became the template for the trench coat.
Entrepreneurs John Emary and Thomas Burberry were responsible for inventing the trench coat as we know it today. Both developed newer versions of established weathercoats. Thomas Burberry, the namesake of the Burberry fashion house, made a decisive contribution to today's appearance, especially through the invention of the gabardine fabric type. However, the fact is - as with so many inventions - that different people contributed to its creation and development. Over the years, a simple weatherproof coat has become a well-known classic .

The special thing about the trench coat is: whether you find an iconic trench coat from Burberry from 1997 in the vintage store or wear a new one from Prada - both options will look contemporary and cool. You simply throw a trench on and it turns a simple outfit into a well-rounded and fashionable look in no time. For example, you can wear jeans and a simple long-sleeved shirt, which in itself is a very basic combination - but with a trench coat over it you can turn it into a stylish look. You can't do much wrong. But the overall look shouldn't be too overloaded, as a trench coat already stands on its own.
So, whether in beige, camel or olive green: a good trench coat is a great investment that is definitely worth it. At the latest when the cool autumn wind whistles around your ears again and you can pull your long coat tighter around you!
