A new page is being turned in Cannes. The Film Festival opens its 77th edition with a clear message: there is no more room on the red carpet for full nudity, for gratuitous provocations (and for sloppiness). But how much can designers&#39; creativity be controlled?

<h3 style="text-align: left;">For the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival , the organisation has introduced new dress codes: the most daring looks in the history of the event, from Madonna to Bella Hadid</h3>

The aim would be to contain the excesses, according to the French Festival, that have marked recent editions. The new rules, officially announced yesterday, exclude transparent clothing, deep necklines and silhouettes that are too cumbersome . Visible nudity will no longer be allowed on the Croisette . In recent years, Cannes has become a place of exhibition as much as of film promotion. The red carpet has often favoured the immediate effect - transparencies, strategic cuts, outfits designed more for social media than for the press - to the detriment of a certain idea of formality. The new rules seem to want to correct this trend, refocusing the event on its institutional character.

The new dress code calls for long dresses, modest proportions and more covering materials. For men, tuxedos are still mandatory. For women, cocktail dresses are also allowed, but only with prior approval. The rules also exclude sports shoes - such as the sneakers worn by Kristen Stewart in 2016 -, excessively decorated or &quot;stage&quot; dresses. The choice raises questions. How will it be applied? Will it be uniform? Or will there be exceptions for A-list celebrities and ambassadors of major fashion houses - who are mostly French?

The management has declared its intention to maintain a consistent line. But the effectiveness of the measure will depend, as always, on the rigour of its application. At a time when the fashion industry is increasingly aware of the political and social implications of dress, the choice of Cannes speaks of a desire for control. And if it is legitimate that this is placed on the message that the red carpet wants to convey, is it legitimate that it is also imposed on creativity?
