Despite being absolutely natural, there is no denying that searches for homemade or medical treatments are huge all over the world. How are wrinkles formed? According to Dr. Cintia Guedes, dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), as you age, your skin becomes less elastic and more fragile. Decreased production of natural oils dries out the skin and makes it appear more wrinkled. The fat in the face also starts to decrease, causing sagging skin and more visible lines. Furthermore, they are grouped into two categories: dynamic (appear when you make repetitive facial movements, such as smiling or squinting) and static (which remain on your face at all times, regardless of muscle movements). "Dynamic wrinkles are similar to a sheet of paper. If I keep folding the paper over and over again, the fold will get deeper and deeper and the crease will develop. In the case of static wrinkles, on the other hand, they develop and get worse due to factors outside&rdquo;, adds the doctor.
Is it really possible to treat them at home? Yes, it is possible as long as the appropriate products are used. Below, learn a little more about each product and understand everything about its particularities (remembering that it is not recommended to do anything without the guidance of a trained professional):

They are what we call the 'gold standard' for at-home wrinkle reduction. &ldquo;They are derived from vitamin A, so they stimulate cell renewal and increase <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/beauty/what-are-the-beauty-benefits-of-cinnamon-skincare-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">collagen</a> production, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles&rdquo;, says the doctor. Retinoids is the umbrella term for all of these derivatives, including retinol, which you can find in over-the-counter products, and retinoic acid, which is available by prescription. In any case, consulting a doctor is vital in this case. &ldquo;In addition to their ability to reduce wrinkles, retinoids can smooth the skin, even out the texture and fade dark spots. But with great potency comes the risk of irritation. To avoid redness and peeling (signs that the active form of retinol, a compound called retinoic acid, is working to produce more collagen), there are strategies like starting with a retinoid twice a week and then a moisturizer. After a few weeks, we can increase usage to three times a week,&rdquo; says Dr. Cintia. And because retinoids can make you more sensitive to UV rays, experts recommend only using them at night, when you're not out in the sun. And the next day, don't forget your sunscreen.

alpha hydroxy acids

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which include glycolic, citric, and lactic acid, increase cell turnover and initiate collagen production, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines over time. AHAs can be found in lower concentrations in over-the-counter facial cleansers and at-home peels, or in higher concentrations in the form of chemical peels administered by a dermatologist. “Glycolic acid has the smallest molecules of all the AHAs, so it can easily penetrate the skin. But because it&#39;s able to penetrate so well, there&#39;s a greater likelihood of irritation, and those with sensitive skin might opt for the milder lactic or citric acid. Remembering that this guidance should always be done by the doctor”, he says.

Antioxidants

Important for prevention, antioxidants (Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Ferulic Acid and Resveratrol) are true defenders of the skin and act to neutralize free radicals, which cause cell damage and, consequently, wrinkles. “In addition, they also help with collagen formation and many of them have a whitening effect. For maximum protection, you can apply it before sunscreen to boost skin defense,” says the doctor.

Ultraviolet rays are one of the biggest causes of premature wrinkles, so sunscreen is the ultimate secret to maintaining youthful looking skin. “Protecting your skin from UV rays will help prevent new wrinkles from forming, as well as slow down the worsening of existing ones on your face. Use it daily and respecting the reapplication of the product: every two hours in direct exposure and every four hours indoors”, he says.

There are also some treatments that you can do in offices: Neurotoxins – Botulinum toxin temporarily stops muscle contractions responsible for dynamic wrinkles. &quot;It relaxes the muscles under the skin, preventing the skin from folding into those lines and wrinkles,&quot; explains the doctor. Neurotoxins are used on the forehead, along the crow&#39;s feet and in the glabellar lines, although they are also safely used &quot;off-label&quot; to smooth lines in other areas of the body, such as the neck and around the mouth. It takes three to seven days for full effect and lasts up to four months on forehead and about three months on crow&#39;s feet. Fillers – A filler is any soft, gel-like substance that can be injected into or underneath the skin to help plump it up. “Fillers are often used to smooth out deep circles under the eyes, lift cheekbones, plump lips and even out nasolabial folds. The most used are hyaluronic acid fillers, which show results that last up to two years and are reversible. Filling doesn&#39;t last forever. It will naturally decompose in your body.” Microfocused ultrasound – In general, this technology delivers energy to the deepest layers of the skin (and may even reach the muscle) that causes clotting points, responsible for stimulating collagen or contracting the muscle. Dermatologist Dr. Cintia Guedes explains that focused ultrasound is a joker treatment indicated for various aging processes. “He has the action in deeper layers. It even acts on the SMAS (Superficial Muscle Aponeurotic System), which is the deepest muscle layer, to have a lifting effect,” explains the doctor. “The focused ultrasound technique is not new, but the first equipment caused a lot of pain. There are already technologies that bring the same efficiency, but cause less pain, by delivering energy in a different way, through the pulsed form”, says dermatologist Dr. Cintia. Lasers – Non-ablative resurfacing lasers are lasers that heat the deeper layers of the dermis without damaging the surface of the skin and improve multiple signs of aging at once, using targeted heat to trigger a healing response in wrinkled skin. “This response stimulates collagen production, which helps to tighten the skin over time. Lasers not only reduce lines, but also improve the appearance of pores, dark spots, texture and overall skin tone,” explains Dr. Cintia. Injectable Biostimulators – Biostimulators will increase the body&#39;s natural collagen production. That way collagen is actually produced where it needs to be. Radiesse, for example, is composed of calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres. “This is a treatment with long-lasting effects, reaching up to 24 months. Applied subcutaneously, it causes an inflammatory process that will trigger collagen production. Over time, it also produces a filling effect, smoother than hyaluronic acid”, he says.
