Unusual sculptures, videos and 3D animations. From 31 October 2024, Moroccan artist Meriem Bennani arrives at Fondazione Prada with an immersive experience that explores family and social relationships from a new and unusual point of view.

Fondazione Prada has devoted ample space over the years to the theme of family and social relationships. Just think of the exhibition "Miranda July: New Society" recently concluded and hosted in the Osservatorio space in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. Or the project by the duo Fitch and Trecartin "It Waves Back" , inaugurated on October 24 at the Prada Ayoyama store in Tokyo. On the theme of relationships, understood as a field of exchange and dialogue, a generation of artists, defined in English as "mid-career", stands out, particularly interested in analyzing and developing it.

Like Meriem Bennani , an artist who in his career has worked with video, film, sculpture, kinetic and immersive installations, who presents at Fondazione Prada &quot;For My Best Family&quot; , on display from 31 October 2024 to 24 February 2024. The work exhibited on the lower floor, entitled Sole crushing , is a mechanical installation composed of 192 flip-flops and slippers that create a chaotic and vibrant choreography. The work invites visitors to interpret it subjectively, deciding whether a sense of order or disorder prevails. The musical composition, lasting about 45 minutes, was created by Reda Senhaji known as Cheb Runner , specifically for the installation. «In creating this orchestra of sounds I wanted to create organic groups that interacted with each other in a way that almost created a choir. What I wanted to achieve was a balance between conversations, but at the same time for each individual part to have its own personality» . The pneumatic system at the base of the installation uses a pre-determined amount of air. When one part of the installation uses more than others, the others fall silent, until a situation of balance is recreated and a choral symphony is created again.

Upstairs is the film For Aisha , an art film directed by Meriem Bennani in collaboration with Orian Barkey and with the creative support of John Michael Boling and Jason Coombs . During the Covid pandemic, the two artists created what became a series, despite initially simply publishing various animated shorts on Instagram, entitled Two Lizards . &quot;A project that was born very spontaneously and that worked well because it was very important to us at that time,&quot; explains the duo. &quot;It was about documenting a reflection on the present by recording our voices. I have a background in animation while Ori has a background in documentary and together we managed to create something particularly interesting.&quot; For Aisha mixes documentary and animation, telling the autobiographical story of Bukhar, a 35-year-old director of Moroccan origin living in New York, and her complex relationship with her mother. All the characters are represented as anthropomorphic animals, adding a further symbolic layer to the narrative.

Both works explore the centrality of human relationships, whether familial or collective. In the film, Bukhar&#39;s homosexuality and its impact on the relationship with his mother are central elements, while in the installation we observe how a crowd becomes a single, living, pulsating body. The slippers, moved by a pneumatic system, simulate breathing , a theme that also returns in the film through the protagonist&#39;s asthma.
