Heart, soul and spirit. MoMa&#39;s new exhibition, &quot;Spirit Movers,&quot; curated by designer Grace Wales Bonner, celebrates works of art inspired by the African diaspora.

Since Grace Wales Bonner founded her eponymous fashion brand in 2014, the London-based designer has repeatedly wanted to pay homage to the black experience by promoting ideas centered on the Afro-Atlantic spirit. Past seasons' collections are influenced by its British and Jamaican origins, and feature styles, prints and colours that encourage cross-cultural exchanges. She is the latest curator chosen for <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/art/claudia-cardinale-show-moma-book-interview-italian-actress-who-is" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MoMA &ndash; Museum of Modern Art</a> 's "Artist's Choice" exhibition, a series begun in 1989, in which a contemporary artist draws from the museum's collection to mount a special installation. Wales Bonner continues the "Artist's Choice" series' legacy of subverting the curatorial status quo; Previous artists include Yto Barrada, Charles White, Trisha Donnelly, Elizabeth Murray and Vik Muniz. "Spirit Movers" is a selection of approximately 50 works inspired by the forms, experiences and sounds of the African diaspora. The wide-ranging exhibition explores themes of musicality, storytelling and the intersection of cultural narratives, and features artists such as Terry Adkins, Agnes Martin and Bety Saar. Although the collection ranges between works that are very different from each other, from a monumental wooden sculpture to a sculptural composition of wind instruments, each work of art fits into an overall vision.

In addition to the exhibition at MoMa, Wales Bonner has just released a second collection in collaboration with <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/fashion/kseniaschnaider-x-adidas-originals-collab-sustainable-brand-ukrainian-photo-look" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Adidas</a>, whose sneakers are now a cult among streetwear enthusiasts. We had seen a hint of the possible textures that Grace Wales Bonner has chosen to apply to the four new shoes (already sold-out) during the spring-summer 2024 fashion show in Paris : the sneakers in leopard-print faux pony hair and suede (with stitching contrast) are everywhere on social media. And again a mahogany-colored knitted set and sand-coloured nylon football shorts, with the three contrasting Adidas stripes for a collection that draws inspiration from the '70s, '80s and '90s.
