29 Arts In Progress Gallery Milan in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation present “Gian Paolo Barbieri: Beyond Fashion”, a retrospective exhibition celebrating the work of the Italian photographer, open until 31 August 2024 at the Casa di Lucie Ostuni in Ostuni in Puglia.

A retrospective exhibition of <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/fashion/famous-fashion-photographers-best-of-all-time-helmut-newton-gilles-bensimon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fashion photographer</a> Gian Paolo Barbieri has opened in Ostuni, Puglia. The exhibition &ldquo;Gian Paolo Barbieri: Beyond Fashion&rdquo; will be presented at the "Casa di Lucie" from 5 July to 31 August . In collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation and the Milanese gallery 29 Arts In Progress, masterpieces by the artist will be presented together with unpublished photographs ranging from the 1960s to 2000, the result of research in the artist's archive.
Barbieri is known for his ironic and provocative images, rich in references to the history of art, with mirrored sets set in exotic locations and cinematic references, which echo his early experiences working at Cinecitt&agrave; in Rome.
The top models of the 90s and celebrities are portrayed in an intimate and spontaneous way: Veruschka, <a href="https://www.lofficielibiza.com/fashion/naomi-campbell-chanel-dress-cannes-film-festival-2024-dress-chanel-1996" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Naomi Campbell</a>, Eva Herzigova, Isabella Rossellini and Monica Bellucci , among others, icons of music and culture such as Mina and Anna Piaggi. The exhibition also reveals shots for important advertising campaigns of Italian and international fashion brands such as Versace, Gianfranco Ferr&egrave;, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce &amp; Gabbana, Valentino and Giorgio Armani.

On display is a fusion of masterpieces and never-before-seen photos pulled from the depths of his vast Milanese archive, spanning from the 1960s to the turn of the century. Often adhering to the film noir lighting style, before devoting himself to a more technicolour, almost surrealist quality, and developing an innovative vision hand in hand with set design and styling, Barbieri has made himself known not only for his idiosyncratic point of view , but for having formed a circle of friends, with all those stylists and operators in the sector, who were fundamental in transforming Milan into the capital of fashion.
For Barbieri, fashion without art becomes "naked and empty". Thus his way of handling the camera always sought to free the women he worked with "from the classic canonical poses of fashion photography, becoming the spokesperson for a new, unconventional elegance, which reveals a more casual and sensual side".
More than 60 years have passed since Barbieri entered the scene; more than 60 extraordinary years defined by high fashion friendships, transcontinental creations and memorable shots that stand the test of time.
