As the 6th edition of Ibiza Art fair opens at Pikes, we take a tour of Ibiza&rsquo;s unmissable galleries.

In the early 1950s Ibiza became a magnet for the Beat generation and hub of both modernist thought and avant-garde sensibilities. With the beats came the artists and riding on this revolutionary wave was Ibiza&rsquo;s Grupo &rsquo;59, a loose new art school that included the Erwins Broner and Bechtold, the Dutch architect Hans van de Laan, Katja Meirowsky, the American artist Bob Munford, Egon Neubauer, Antonio Ruiz, and Heinz Tr&ouml;kes. collective held their first exhibition in El Corsario, a restored palacio high up in Dalt Vila. Opened by Emil Schillinger, El Corsario (The Pirate) was ostensibly a hotel but soon became one of the most important art spaces in Europe. It was followed by the eponymous galleries of Ivan Spence and Carl Van Der Voort. The art was modern and the attitudes liberal, and war seemed a distant dream. &lsquo;It was a very strong emotional impulse,&rsquo; the German artist Meirowsky recalled. &lsquo;It seemed unreal: the blue sky, the colour of the sea, and the citadel of Dalt Vila. Things that were diametrically opposed to the threatening world in which I had lived.&rsquo;
Ibiza&rsquo;s cult of modern art was born, and for almost 65 years the island has been home to some of the art world&rsquo;s most interesting figures, from notorious faker Elmyr de Hory to the famous Spanish abstract painter, Antonio Villanueva. Thanks to this rich heritage, Ibiza has a vast and diverse array of galleries, from the classic to the boundary breaking. These eight galleries offer a remarkable insight into Ibiza&rsquo;s unique art scene.

Launched yesterday and running for one week at the legendary Pikes hotel, Ibiza Art Fair is a celebration of creativity. During the Ibiza Art Fair, over 70 national and international exhibitors will showcase more than 300 original contemporary artworks in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere packed with art talks, live paintings, children&rsquo;s activities and shopping.

<a href="https://www.lanavesalinas.org/">La Nave Salinas</a>
Originally built in 1941, this imposing stone building near the salt village of Las Salinas was conceived to provide employment during the Spanish Postwar period. The objective was to build a warehouse to store salt from the surrounding salt flats, however its doors remained closed until 2015, when NYC-based art collector Lio Malca bought the empty building and transformed it into a dynamic space dedicated to art exhibitions. Past installations include those by Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. The current exhibition is based on Malca&rsquo;s private collection of works by the artist Eva Beresin. Until October 28th.

Ibiza&rsquo;s most prominent art space occupies the site of a former munitions storehouse in the walls of Dalt Vila but is in fact built upon much earlier foundations &ndash; the remains of 6th century Phoenician houses are visible beneath the museum&rsquo;s glass floor. MACE is a temple to modern art and is inarguably the starting point for anyone interested in exploring Ibiza&rsquo;s role in the art world of the mid-20th century. The permanent collection holds works by Balearic art scene luminaries Erwin Broner, Raoul Hausman, Isabel Echarri, Antoni Tur Costa, Antoni Mar&iacute; Ribas &lsquo;Portmany&rsquo; and the recently deceased Erwin Bechtold.

<a href="http://www.espacio-micus.com/">Espacio Micus</a>
Perhaps Ibiza&rsquo;s most atmospheric art space, the decades-old Espacio Micus lies hidden on a tiny camino near Jes&uacute;s. The space began to take shape in 19732, when the artist Eduard Micus escaped the political upheaval of his native Germany and fled to the calm shores of Ibiza. The vast multi-level building was conceived as a studio and workshop but grew piece by piece to accommodate an ever-growing collection of works. Micus&rsquo; daughter, Katja, now curates the gallery, pairing her father&rsquo;s works with exhibitions throughout the season by internationally recognised contemporary artists.

An authentic lighthouse constructed 1897 whose working life came to an end in 1963. The iconic building has become one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces in Ibiza and features a socio-cultural hub and ocean interpretation centre along with a revolving art gallery. In 2014 the lighthouse&rsquo;s original lamp was restored and replaced in situ, having been discovered, dismantled, in a local henhouse.

This beautiful country house on the San Juan road is home to the acclaimed British sculptor Christopher Stone, whose large-scale bronze sculptures, furniture designs and assorted artworks can be viewed in an informal setting around the building. The space is open daily throughout the year and art lovers, collectors and the curious are welcomed by Christopher in person.

The Puget Museum occupies a former aristocratic residence in Dalt Vila on what was formerly the main street. It is popularly known as Can Comasema as it was the palacio of the de Comasema family, originally from Mallorca, who occupied it during the 19th century. The oldest part of the house probably dates from the 15th century. The building currently houses a collection of 130 pictorial works by the famous Ibiza painters Narciso Puget Riquer and Narciso Puget Vi&ntilde;as. The oil paintings and watercolours depict landscapes and scenes from everyday life in Ibiza in the early- and mid-twentieth centuryand offer a window into a forgotten world.

ADDA Gallery is a contemporary art space founded by Anna Dimitrova that has outlets in both Paris and Ibiza. ADDA is the only gallery in Ibiza to focus solely on urban art. The current exhibition, Fresco Fresco, features 14 new wave urban artists from Barcelona who bring the vibrant port city&rsquo;s unique tastes and styles to Ibiza. The gallery is housed in the striking <a href="https://www.paradisoibiza.com/">Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel</a>, a hyper-contemporary residence in San Antonio.
