The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) , in collaboration with the Fondation Cartier pour l&#39;art contemporain , presents a retrospective of Colombian artist Olga de Amaral until October 12, 2025. The exhibition brings together more than 50 works created over six decades, many of which are being exhibited outside of Colombia for the first time.

Born in Bogotá in 1932, Olga de Amaral was one of the pioneers of contemporary textile art. Her training in architecture and textile design at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan allowed her to develop traditional weaving techniques while also being influenced by modernism, constructivism, and pre-Columbian art. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/olgadeamaral/">Olga de Amaral</a> (93) pushes the boundaries of textile art, often combining weaving, knotting, and braiding to create striking three-dimensional abstract forms. Her research has also led her to experiment with paint, cotton, plaster, gold leaf, linen, and palladium. He<a href="https://www.instagram.com/icamiami/"> </a><a href="https://www.instagram.com/icamiami/">Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami</a> (ICA Miami), in collaboration with the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fondationcartier/">Fondation Cartier</a> pour l&#39;art contemporain , presents a retrospective of his work until October 12, 2025. This exhibition includes the Stelae (1996–2018), vibrant gold leaf works that refract and absorb light, evoking pre-Columbian goldwork similar to the funerary sculptures of pre-Hispanic archaeological sites. They are a kind of hanging gold plaques, an irregular wall, shiny and captivating for their intense golden yellow color.

Another of her acclaimed recent works is the Brumas series (2013&ndash;2018). Shining threads and complex weaving techniques hang from the ceiling. These suspended cloud-like forms allow the viewer to move around them, admiring the different geometric silhouettes formed depending on the light and the viewing location.
The design at the ICA Miami was the work of architect Lina Ghotmeh, who took advantage of the unique setting of the museum's third floor, overlooking the surrounding treetops. Her idea was to extend this landscape of green foliage to the exhibition: she imagined a vertical forest , where the works appear to grow within the gallery.
The spiral motif, a recurring element in Amaral's work, once again serves as a guiding structure, leading the visitor through an immersive space in which his explorations gradually emerge.
This exhibition reveals the breadth and complexity of the artist's practice, highlighting pivotal periods in her career development as she moved from colourful explorations of the grid to experiments with the materiality and scale of her works.
